How to save hard drive space
You'd be surprised at how quickly you can fill up your hard drive. This can slow it down, and prevent you from saving important files later on. Here are a few tips to reduce the amount you use.- Uninstall some applications. There are usually a lot of programs installed that you never use. It's a good idea to remove a few, as they can take a lot of hard disk space. You can uninstall programs from the control panel
- Delete unused files. You will have a lot of unneeded files on your hard drive. Delete them to free up hard drive space for other files. Make sure you do this once in a while.
- Compress files. If you have some files you use, but not very often (e.g. every few months) it might be a good idea to compress and archive them. You can use something like 7 zip to compress old files and folders.
- Internet files. When you surf on the internet, you do create a lot of temporary internet files. These take up valuable hard drive space. Delete them by going to 'Internet Options' in the control panel (for internet explorer). Also delete files in the 'temp' folder. Just start Run and type in 'temp' to display the folder.
- Prefetch. Start Run, type in 'prefetch' and delete all the files in the folder that pops up.
